San Carlo with the McQueen

Last weekend marked me and my boyfriend's first anniversary.

We ended up making a last minute booking to San Carlo Birmingham, an Italian restaurant with some amazing food. Of course, I took the opportunity to get super excited about finally having an excuse to dress up and I FINALLY got to wear a Christmas gift which hasn't had a chance to leave my wardrobe- my Alexander McQueen dress!

I wasn't able to take my new camera with me as the camera bag I have is too big and I haven't had a chance to buy a smaller one yet, so sadly no food photos from San Carlo (because I also forgot to use my phone because I'm an idiot). However, I can very strongly recommend the Tournedo Rossini, which is a fillet steak cooked in a Madeira wine sauce topped with pate- foodgasm is the only appropriate word here. We added sides of courgette fries and sautéed potatoes with onion and bacon. For starters I had the Funghi Piemontese as there was too much choice and whenever in doubt I just gravitate towards mushrooms. The garlic-y sauce was delectable, but I couldn't help but be conscious of the ridiculous mark-up on the dish and again I resolved to stop buying vegetarian dishes in restaurants (it won't last). My boyfriend went for the Crespelle, a dish close to his heart from memories of holidays to Ravello, a small town in Southern Italy. It's essentially a crepe with a delicious, thick (but not heavy) cheese sauce and a smothering of a tomato sauce, the latter of which was incredible and I can still never understand why Italian restaurant tomato sauce tastes so much better than everything. Dessert was of course a tiramisu, and then we stumbled (well, I did because I can't handle my red wine at all) off to find a taxi home.
